General FAQs
Trial Lessons/Gift Vouchers FAQs
Is there an age limit for Trial lessons and PPL(H) Training?
There is no upper age limit and as long as you are fit and able to fly, we will try to accommodate you. However we recommend that children under the age of 12 years old should not take a trial lesson. PPL(H) flight training cannot be logged towards a licence until the age of 14 years old.
Is there a height restriction?
To fit comfortably in the Robinson R22, you will probably be under 6'4". If you are taller than this, you will probably find the Robinson R44 or Bell 206 more comfortable.
Is there a weight restriction?
For the Robinson R22 you should be less than 17 stones.
For the Robinson R44 you should be less than 211/2 stones.
What about safety?
Sandtoft Aerodrome is a CAA licensed airfield with ample safety equipment and radio operation to ensure maximum safety. Our instructors are fully qualified CAA approved flight instructors who teach flying for a living. Our helicopters have to undergo stringent safety checks on a regular basis and are CAA approved. We are fully insured for public liability and understand that first time pilots may be a little apprehensive so will do our utmost to reassure you. Air transport is one of the safest forms of travel and helicopters, like all aircraft are very safe machines when used in the correct way and to dispel a myth, helicopters can glide and unlike aeroplanes, we don't need a runway to land on!
Safety aspects are a big part of the training and continuation of flying. Our experienced qualified team are always on hand to offer advice.
How many hours do I need for my licence?
For a Private Pilot Licence you will need a minimum of 45 hours. You will also have to study and sit seven subjects for your ground exams.
Are the ground exams difficult?
Not too difficult! They are multiple choice questions and we will recommend books and study material to help you. As you progress through the flight training syllabus, you will study for each subject in turn and find it interesting as you develop your flying skills. The theory knowledge is an essential part of the syllabus. Most of the learning is done by self study. We also offer Ground School Tuition if required.
What about the medical requirements?
The Class Two medical (required for PPL(H)) requires a basic reasonably good health. We can provide details of CAA approved doctors in your local area who can issue medicals.
The Class One medical (required for CPL(H) level) is more stringent and the initial one must be undertaken at the Civil Aviation Authority's premises at Gatwick.
Can I afford to train as a pilot?
Flying helicopters isn't the cheapest hobby or career training. It is however one of the most enjoyable and rewarding things you can do, either as a job or a hobby. For that reason, many people find a way to learn and continue to fly. Contrary to popular belief many people can learn to fly if they do it over a period of time. If you are looking for a career as a pilot there may be several funding options available to you. Some banks will issue loans to provide for training costs and you may be able to get assistance from government funders. To discuss these options please contact us.
How long does it take?
You can train for your PPL(H) at your own pace. There are certain time limitations regarding the written exams and to achieve a satisfactory rate of progress we recommend that you fly as regularly as time and weather allows.
What can I do once I have my licence?
There are many options open to you once you have your licence. You can hire our helicopters yourself, join our Hour Building Programme, continue training for a Commercial Pilot Licence or add a Flight Instructor Rating to your licence.
How do I keep my licence current?
For each helicopter rating you have you must fly a minimum of 2 hours on type within the validity of the rating and complete a Licence Proficiency Check each year. This can be arranged for you at Sandtoft Aerodrome regardless of whether you completed your initial training with us or not.
How long will I be in the helicopter for?
When you purchase a 30 or 60 minute voucher, you get just that, 30 or 60 minutes in the helicopter. The briefing is not included in the flying time so you get good value for money.
Can I bring passengers?
The R22 is a two seat helicopter so no room for passengers! The R44 is a four seat helicopter and we may be able to take passengers with prior notice.
Can I bring a camera/video camera?
Yes. You can also ask friends and family to photograph, film and watch your take off, landing and hovering attempt. We have a club house, viewing area, outside patio, plenty of parking and a full cafeteria and licensed bar.
Are you near to me?
If you are from Yorkshire, Humberside or Lincolnshire, chances are that we are within easy reach. Our great location near the M1, M18, A1, M62 and M180 means we are within an hours drive of most major Northern cities and a lot nearer for some.
When can I take my flight?
Once you have received a voucher you can contact us to arrange a time to suit you and us. We are open from 9am till 6pm 7 days a week weather permitting so there will be plenty of times you can take your flight.

You can then pay the extra cost when you come to see us. It may be possible to upgrade your flight without prior notice subject to availability, so if you find you are enjoying it so much you can ask on the day for a longer flight.
