General FAQs
Is there an age limit for Trial lessons and PPL(H) Training?
There is no upper age limit and as long as you are fit and able to fly, we will try to accommodate you. However we recommend that children under the age of 12 years old should not take a trial lesson. PPL(H) flight training cannot be logged towards a licence until the age of 14 years old.
Is there a height restriction?
To fit comfortably in the Robinson R22, you will probably be under 6’4”. If you are taller than this, you will probably find the Robinson R44 or Bell 206 more comfortable.
Is there a weight restriction?
For the Robinson R22 you should be less than 17 stones.
For the Robinson R44 you should be less than 21 and ½ stones.
What about safety?
Sandtoft Aerodrome is a CAA licensed airfield with ample safety equipment and radio operation to ensure maximum safety. Our instructors are fully qualified CAA approved flight instructors who teach flying for a living. Our helicopters have to undergo stringent safety checks on a regular basis and are CAA approved. We are fully insured for public liability and understand that first time pilots may be a little apprehensive so will do our utmost to reassure you. Helicopters, like all aircraft are very safe machines when used in the correct way…and to dispel a myth, helicopters can glide and unlike aeroplanes, we don’t need a runway to land on!
Safety aspects are a big part of the training and continuation of flying. Our experienced qualified team are always on hand to offer advice.
How long will I be in the helicopter for?
When you purchase a 30 or 60 minute voucher, you get just that, 30 or 60 minutes in the helicopter. The briefing is not included in the flying time so you get good value for money.
Can I bring passengers?
The R22 is a two seat helicopter so no room for passengers! The R44 is a four seat helicopter and we may be able to take passengers with prior notice.
Can I bring a camera/video camera?
Yes. You can also ask friends and family to photograph, film and watch your take off, landing and hovering attempt. We have a club house, viewing area, outside patio, plenty of parking and a full cafeteria and licensed bar.
Are you near to me?
If you are from Yorkshire, Humberside or Lincolnshire, chances are that we are within easy reach. Our great location near the M1, M18, A1, M62 and M180 means we are within an hours drive of most major Northern cities and a lot nearer for some.
When can I take my flight?
Once you have received a voucher you can Contact Us to arrange a time to suit you and us. We are open from 9am till sunset 7 days a week weather permitting so there will be plenty of times you can take your flight.
How long is my voucher valid?
Your voucher is valid for 6 months from the date of purchase. This date will be detailed on your voucher.
If I like it can I book more?
Yes you can. We also conduct training for the Private Pilot’s Licence for Helicopters which means that you can continue your training with us to gain your licence. Your trial flight will count towards the total hours you need to get your licence. Time permitting, if you like your trial flight so much you may take a lesson later on the same day.
Can I upgrade my voucher?
Yes you can. All you have to do is tell us when you ring to arrange your lesson and we will book you in for the extra time you want. You can then pay the extra cost when you come to see us.
Is my voucher transferable?
Yes it is. You must call us to arrange a change of name but we will allow you to transfer the voucher to another person.
Does the price include VAT?
All trial lessons are inclusive of VAT.
How can I pay?
If you have received a voucher you have no more to pay unless you want to upgrade to a longer flight. If you would like to purchase a voucher you can send us a cheque or call to order your voucher. We accept credit and debit card payments.
