Flight Instructor Rating
Once you have obtained your Commercial Pilot Licence, you may choose to instruct and so need to add your Flight Instructor (FI) Rating to your licence, either to work towards hour building or just for the challenge and achievement that comes with teaching others to fly. Your Flight Instructor Rating can be completed with us here at Sandtoft.
You will find the flight instructor course extremely challenging and good fun, with a combination of flying and ground school being undertaken.
The requirements for the Instructor rating course are as follows:
- Minimum Age - 18
- Applicants must have met the knowledge requirements for a CPL(H).
- A minimum of 250 hours flight time as pilot of helicopters, including 100 hours as Pilot in Command (PIC) of which 10 hours should be cross country.
- Hold a valid JAR-FCL Class 1 Medical Certificate.
- Pass a specific pre-entry flight test within the six months preceding the course. (This will assess the ability of the applicant to complete the course and can be taken at the airfield with one of our examiners.)
Flight Training
The FI(H) Course consists of at least 30 hours of flight training and can additionally include the training requirements to allow night instruction.
Ground school
The ground instruction includes teaching practice, tuition and progress tests.
Skill Test
The final test is carried out by an examiner approved by the Civil Aviation Authority. The applicant has to demonstrate to the examiner his/her ability to instruct a student pilot to the level required for the issue of a PPL(H), including pre-flight, post-flight and theoretical knowledge instruction.
The skill test is in addition to the flight training course.
The course can usually be completed within 4 weeks and we can schedule bookings to suit your other commitments.

The flight training cost is £285 + VAT per hour based on the Robinson R22 and ground school tuition is £2000 + VAT.
