Private Pilot Licence (Helicopters) PPL(H)
Flight Training
Flight training is usually conducted in either the Robinson R22 or R44. We can also offer PPL(H) flight training in the Bell 206 Jetranger.
We recommend that if you haven't flown in a helicopter before, you first book one of our Trial Lessons. If you decide to pursue your licence this will count towards your flight training hour requirements.
The European JAR PPL(H) Course consists of:
- A minimum of 45 hours of flight training
- The total time will include ten hours solo flight time, including five hours solo cross-country. (The requirements for solo flight are that you are sixteen years or over and that you have a Class One or Two medical certificate from an Authorised Medical Examiner.)
- One cross-country flight has to be 100nms and include landing away at two aerodromes en-route.
- A skills test to be taken with a flight examiner within six months of completing the flight instruction.
- 7 ground exams
- Radio Telephony oral exam
The ground exams are as follows:
- Aviation Law & Operational Procedures
- Human Performance and Limitations
- Navigation and Radio Aids
- Meteorology
- Aircraft (General) & Principals of Flight
- Flight Performance and Planning
- Communications (PPL) (written and oral)
The written examinations are multi-choice, with a pass mark of 75%. These and the Radio Telephony oral examination are all taken at Sandtoft Helicopters with our own examiners.
We can offer Ground School classes giving tuition on the above subjects. We will also advise on the material required for studying for the exams and recommend that a Sandtoft Helicopters Study Pack, which contains all the relevant material, be obtained.
Once you have reached all the requirements and passed a flight test you will be free to explore the sky on your own, take friends and family flying, join our unique Hour Building Programme which is designed to help develop your skills and build your hours, for either your Commercial Pilot Licence, Flight Instructor Rating or just for fun.
The PPL(H) course can be completed as quickly or as leisurely as you like.
